How do you split a bill with tip?
Work out the tip on the pre-tax amount (for example 10% of 120 is 12), add it and any tax to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. 120 + 12 tip split 4 ways is 33.00 each.
Should tip be calculated before or after tax?
The usual convention is to tip on the pre-tax amount, which is what this calculator does. Tipping on the after-tax total is a slightly more generous choice — either is fine as long as the group agrees.
Is an even split fair?
Only when everyone ordered roughly the same. If one person had a salad and another had steak and wine, split by item: each person pays for what they had plus their proportional share of tax and tip.
What if the total does not divide evenly?
This calculator rounds each share up to the cent so the bill is always covered; the group ends up a few cents over at most. LazySplit bills instead hand out leftover cents one at a time so shares add up exactly.
